The journal of Eugene Delacroix

Delacroix, Eugene, 1798-1863, author1995French, English
This journal is one of the great documents in art history, a magnificent work of literature as well as a vital documentary source for scholars and students. Its unselfconscious spontaneity and freshness give the work its unique quality. Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) was one of the greatest French painters of the Romantic period. Passionately opposed to the sterile conventions of David and the other academic artists, he took up again the broken threads of the great Baroque style and created a long run of masterpieces. But even if he had never put brush to canvas, he would still live as a famous diarist.;"Delacroix's Journal" is one of the great documents in art history, a work of literature as well as a vital documentary source for scholars and students. In it the artist discusses his own paintings, his life, his sorrows and hopes; the paintings and sculptures of Rubens, Michelangelo, Constable, Bonington and others; old and new literature and the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini and his close friend Chopin; the events of his tune; the beauties of nature; life in foreign countries.;Throughout he never loses his grip on the reader, though it seems that he wrote for himself only and never thought of being read. The resulting unselfconscious spontaneity and freshness give the work its unique quality, both as literature and as a source of insight into the mind of a great artist.;The complete text of the journal is immensely long, and the selection of this volume, edited by Hubert Wellington and translated by Lucy Norton, comprises about half of the original. The 80 illustrations complement the text by reproducing relevant portraits, works in progress at certain dates, and pictures by Rubens and others which are commented on in the journal or form important sources of influence.

A life of Picasso

Richardson, John, 1924-2019, author1991 - 1992English
The author introduces material on the artist's early training in religious art, and establishes his passion for Barcelona and Catalan "modernisme". There are also portraits of Apollinaire, Max Jacob and Gertrude Stein who made up "The Picasso Gang". The book won the 1991 Whitbread biography award. A Life of Picasso magnificently combines meticulous scholarship with irrestible narrative appeal. John Richardson draws on his close friendship with Picasso, his own diaries, with the collaboration of picasso's widow Jacqueline, and unprecedented access to his studio and papers to arrive at a profound understanding of the artist and his work. He has distilled a lifetime's study into a book that is monumental, enthralling and perceptive - at last, an account of the artist's life that is worthy of its subject. Volume I sheds new light on Picasso's innovations, obsessions and influences and reveals how his art and life were inextricably bound together. It explores his Spanish roots: his intensely Andalusian nature, his adolescence in Corunna and Madrid and his passion for Barcelona, where he became the hero of Catalan 'modernisme'. It chronicles his formative early years in Paris and his complex relationships with Apollinaire, Max jacob and Gertrude Stein during the Blue and Rose periods. At the end of the book we see Picasso already poised to become the messiah of modern art, ready to develop into one of the great artist of the twentieth century.

Jackson Pollock

FRANK, ELIZABETH, author1983English
Traces the life and career of the American artist, explains how he developed his painting techniques, and assesses his contribution to modern art. Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) revolutionised the art of this century with his famous "pouring paintings" of the late 1940s and early '50s. No artist of our time has been more controversial, and Pollock's reputation as the archetypal Abstract Expressionist has assumed mythic overtones. The balanced evaluation presented in this well-reasoned overview is long overdue.

Matthew Smith: His Life and Reputation

Yorke, Malcom, authorEnglish
The first full-scale biography of Matthew Smith, one of the most original English figurative painters of the century. He was in his lifetime frequently, but mistakenly, seen as an English Fauve or as a disciple of Matisse, but in fact he evolved his own distinctive style independently from anything he had seen in English art schools or the French galleries. Smith was the son of a rich and cultured Yorkshire manufacturer, but soon felt impelled to rebel against the Victorian taste of his father and his class. He failed to impress tutors at the Slade, went to France to see what the modern movements there had to offer, and then returned to mingle in the circles round Sickert and Fry. His grim experiences in World War 1 forced him to sort out his priorities both as a man and an artist. Eventually, a passionate love affair in middle age enabled him to establish his own uniquely turbulent style and subject matter of still-lifes, landscapes and uninhibited nudes. Augustus John and Epstein were close friends as were many other literary and artistic figures in Paris, Provence and London. He was shaken by personal tragedies, but well into old age he seemed able to attract the love of cultivated and attractive younger women. There have been several retrospective exhibitions since his death in 1959, notably at the Royal Academy and twice at the Barbican. Dr Yorke's detailed biography traces the life and reputation of this unassuming man who 'spoke like an intelligent moth' , but who produced pictures of such rich colour and extrovert handling that they have no parallels in the history of English painting.
