'Operation Frankton' is the operational name of the famous ‘Cockleshell Heroes’ raid during WWII, carried out by ten Royal Marines that paddled the length of the Gironde Estuary in tiny canoes to place explosive limpet mines on German merchant ships harboured in the French port of Bordeaux.Although the raid was partially successful, only two of the ten men would survive to tell the story; Major Blondie Hasler and Marine Bill Sparks. The Combined Military Services Museum in Maldon, Essex, houses many artefacts used by the Royal Marine Boom Patrol Detachment that carried out this daring raid. Some rare Cockle canoes, one of which is accepted as having been taken on the raid but not used due to damage during the launch procedure and subsequently returned in the submarine, are on display. Part of the collection has recently been exhibited at the Musée de l’Armée in Paris. The museum archives contain historic documents and papers relevant to the raid including the technical notes of Cockle designer Fred Goatley and Major Blondie Hasler who was the commanding officer. This publication is the true story of the ‘Cockleshell Heroes’ and serves as a guide to the 'Operation Frankton' collection providing depth to the story and the museum artefacts. It serves as both an accurate introduction to the subject and also a valuable addition to the military historian’s bookshelf.
