The Chapelry of Elland : the lives of it's inhabitants at the end of the 17th century, from probate records

Heywood, Richard (Editor)2022
Book
This is the latest in a series of books containing the probate records of people in five townships in the Chapelry of Elland (part of the ancient Parish of Halifax) who died at the end of the 17th century. It has been compiled by the Halifax Probate Group, set up many years ago as a WEA class by the late Alan Petford. Collected in the book are the wills, inventories and associated documents of 67 people, mainly engaged in the dual economy of agriculture and textiles. The wills show us how in their dying days men (mainly) wanted to avoid dissension among their survivors, to ensure that their property was secured to their heirs, and that children, including those not yet born, would be cared for and educated. The inventories provide intriguing glimpses into the lives of both rich and poor. As well as careful transcriptions of the documents, there are indexes, a detailed glossary and maps. The extensive introduction contains research and analysis by members of the group, and an absorbing description of the process of probate.
