This, Flusfeder's seventh novel, is a medieval road movie, Umberto Eco seen through the eyes of Quentin Tarantino, recounting the journey taken from Oxford to Viterbo in 1267 by John and his two monk(ish) companions, at the behest of the friar and magnus Roger Bacon, carrying a secret burden to His Holiness Clement IV. The holy trio are ambushed by all sorts of sins, as well as thieves, women keen for sex, ambition and the sheer hell of medieval life.
