The Watchers
Loughlin, Kelly2026
Book
Writer Kelly Loughlin has produced an illustrated essay documenting the making of the cult film 'The Watchers', filmed in 1968 by students from the Royal College of Art and directed by Richard 'Dick' Foster.Shot in Todmorden and the surrounding moors, the film has now been released in it's entirety (26 minutes) on BFI Player. Featuring one of the earliest depictions of alien abduction in British cinema, it prefigures Todmorden's subsequent reputation as a UFO hotspot, following reports of PC Alan Godfrey's alien encounter in 1980.Drawing on archive sources and interviews with key members of the 1968 crew, the essay documents the making of the film and it's afterlives. The essay includes an interview with director Richard Foster in 2023. The book forms part of an interpretation of 'The Watchers', in tandem with a reimagined soundtrack LP and live theatre adaption.
